Abstract
Is it possible to dwell “poetically” in Hong Kong? Can Hong Kong serve as a compass for Sinophone poetry in its global network? This presentation offers a focus on three Hong Kong-born literary journals – Pangolin House, 聲韻詩刊/Voice & Verse Poetry Magazine, and Cha: An Asian Literary Journal – that epitomize the effort of (re)orienting and disseminating Sinophone poetry in translation, hence turning the island into a pivot of the global network. We will explore how these bilingual or multilingual journals, by giving vent to a vast array of places of production, ideological spaces, linguistic identities, and communities across translingualism, stand as prominent gravitational forces, as they steer lyrical dialogue around the multifarious lyrical shapes of Sinophone poetry that goes beyond languages and localisms.
Bio
Simona Gallo is Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Milan. Specializing in contemporary Chinese and Sinophone Literature, she combines her literary research with Translation and Cultural Studies. She has published several papers on the topics of cultural translation, intertextuality, as well as self-translation and contemporary Sinophone poetry, which currently stand as her main research interests.
