Présentation

Mes recherches portent sur deux ensembles d’objets chinois : la céramique et les émaux qui relèvent respectivement de deux traditions techniques opposées. Le premier endogène et le seconde exogène. Mais tous deux sont particulièrement pertinents et complémentaires pour observer la juste place de la Chine dans les processus d’échanges à longue distance dans deux espace-temps différents de l’histoire-monde (Chine-océan Indien occidental ou Chine-Europe). Concrètement, ce qui m’intéresse plus particulièrement consiste en l’étude des phénomènes de convergence observables à partir de ces ensembles d’objets, et ce avec des études approfondies au niveau local.

Mes recherches s’ordonnent selon cinq axes thématiques.  Le premier concerne l’artisanat de la céramique en Chine du Sud (Xe-XIVe siècle) étudié comme un fait social total. Le second consiste en des enquêtes ethno-archéologiques menées dans les provinces du Jiangxi et du Zhejiang. Le troisième porte sur les rapports entre pouvoir et savoirs, par l’étude du patronage impérial de l’artisanat de la céramique, au travers des recherches menées sur un individu, Tang Ying (1686-1756), un administrateur de la Maison impériale de la cour Sino-Mandchous. Le quatrième se consacre à l’histoire maritime et globale de la céramique de style chinois et ce à partir des tessons du IXe au XVIIIe siècle trouvés sur des sites archéologiques dans la péninsule d’Arabie, en Afrique, en Océanie, en Asie du Sud-Est et en Europe. Le cinquième a trait à la circulation des objets émaillés et de leurs techniques entre la Chine et la France aux XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles.

Ces recherches se convergent vers un objectif commun :  explorer de nouvelles méthodes de recherche susceptibles de contribuer à la construction d’une nouvelle histoire connectée fondée sur l’analyse des objets. De mon expérimentation méthodologique, je retiens au moins quatre notions fortes : 1) les objets considérés comme des matériaux d’étude historique à part entière ; 2) la chronographie ou l’assemblage envisagé comme méthode d’analyse relationnelle du flux d’échange ; 3) l’interdisciplinarité reconnue comme une nécessité pour observer la matérialité des échanges ; 4) les espaces connectés considérés en eux-mêmes comme étant des acteurs.
