Presentation

I have been conducting research in Mongolia since the early 2000s. For a long time, my work focused on music, but it has more broadly addressed the power of words (whether sung, declaimed, or simply spoken). I am currently interested in what I have called – after many others – « figures of eminence ». The aim is to understand how, in Mongolia, certain individuals come to stand out by presenting themselves as bearers of specific virtues, often linked to two major concerns that are highly salient both in urban and rural contexts: fortune or luck (one’s own or that of one’s group of belonging), and strength or vitality (above all one’s own).
One of these virtues is denoted by the term mergen, whose semantic core I am seeking to identify. Mergen refers to the ability of archers to shoot accurately (archery is now practiced in Mongolia only by a small number of enthusiasts, but they are very involved in the country’s political life). Mergen also designates the sagacity of certain individuals capable of influencing the future (diviners, ritual specialists, astrologers, politicians, and others). Finally, mergen refers to the subtlety of certain speakers who find the right words, provocative metaphors, and telling examples, and who skillfully handle the arts of oratory and conversational timing.
Studying the composition of this unusual combination feeds into a long-standing question in the social sciences in general, and in political anthropology in particular. This question concerns charisma and the capacity of singular individuals to present themselves as examples or models from whom everyone could, should, might have, or should have drawn inspiration in order to orient themselves in an uncertain life. During my fieldwork, I therefore spend time with women and men who are archers (even though in their everyday lives they may be doctors, surgeons, engineers, lawyers, directors of various kinds), astrologers, diviners, and eloquent speakers (which often implies saying a great deal in very few words). I seek to understand the kinds of concerns toward which Mongolian moral life is oriented.
As Mongolian is a language of great power, great beauty, and – for me – great strangeness, I devote a great deal of time to translating texts, transcribing the treasures of oral literature to which my interlocutors frequently refer. In this sense, my fieldwork in Mongolia consists of deep immersions in a flow of speech and communication. I seek to understand how and in what ways this communication contributes to weaving a social order structured by modes of relating (to people and to the environment).
