Thesis : The ecclesial bureaucracy in the principality of Cochinchina during the episcopate of François Pérez (1687-1728) : A philological and historical study
Directed by Philippe Papin and Pascale Bermon
Presentation
My doctoral research aims to establish a social history of Catholic communities in Cochinchina (the southern part of Vietnam, a principality ruled since 1558 by the Nguyễn lords) under the episcopate of François Pérez (1689-1728), the third Vicar Apostolic of Cochinchina appointed by Rome. More specifically, it examines the role played by the Vietnamese Catholics (priests and lay people) within these communities and will also clarify the complex relationship between European missionaries and native Catholics. This study is based on an unpublished corpus of Latin manuscripts conserved in the archives of the "Société des Missions Étrangères" (MEP) and in the archives of the Roman Congregation "de Propaganda Fide".
