Faced with the spectacular growth of the periodical press during Meiji era, the Roman Catholic Church quickly realized the role it could play for the mission. In this chapter, I outline the history of Catholic publications in Japan from the 1880s to the Pacific War. Far from a coherent process, the emergence of this press ecosystem resulted from multiple experimentations and failures. After early attempts to establish a lasting presence in the public debate, the late Meiji and Taisho eras saw the stabilization and diversification of Catholic journals before an increased centralization in the 1930s. This history also reveals the underlying tensions existing between missionaries, mostly from the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and Japanese believers, and between different visions of evangelization. In the end, if offers a snapshot into the integration of Catholicism into the Japanese intellectual landscape.
