As part of the CRCAO’s “Laughter in the Japanese Literary Tradition” research program, we plan to hold two symposiums at Paris Cité University. The first will take place on Friday, September 19, 2025, and will be entitled « Whom or What Are We Making Fun of? Humor and mockery in the Japanese Literature ». The second, on Friday, June 5, 2026, will be entitled: « What’s There to Laugh about?! Humor and Seriousness in the Japanese Literature ».
On this occasion, we are pleased to launch two calls for 30-minute papers in French, English, or Japanese on one of these themes. In both cases, the aim is to reflect on the place of humor in the literary tradition of Japan, including serious canonical works, and the nature, mechanisms, and various aspects of this humor. Our starting point is classical literature, but proposals on modern or contemporary Japanese literature will be welcome too.
Abstracts of about 300-400 words in French, English, or Japanese should be e-mailed to marianne.simon-oikawa@u-paris.fr and daniel.struve@u-paris.fr.
Deadline for submissions:
– Wednesday 9 July 2025 for the « Whom or what are we making fun of? Humor and mockery in Japanese literature » (19 September 2025)
– Wednesday 31 December 2025 for « What’s there to laugh about? Humor and Seriousness in the Japanese Literature » (5 June 2026).
