The Study of Tangut Buddhist Texts: Recent Findings and Perspectives for Future Research

17 janvier 2025 - Conférence

In the framework of the research programme The Tibetan Religious Landscape After the Empire (CRCAO–UMR8155, Marta Sernesi)

Recent decades have seen important developments in the study of Tangut Buddhist texts and their relationship to mainstream Sinitic and Tibetan Buddhism.
However, since most modern research is published in Chinese, it remains largely unavailable to the scholars outside China.
The talk will present some recent developments in the study of the Tangut Buddhist texts discovered in Khara-Khoto and elsewhere in the former Tangut territory.
We will present recent findings on the two major realms of Tangut Buddhism, i.e. the Sinitic and the Tibetan, and discuss issues of translation, local textual production, and textual dissemination. The main focus of the talk will be on the texts of esoteric Tangut Buddhism and some recently identified Tangut Chan Buddhist texts. Some of the materials discussed in the lecture have not been published before, and will be introduced here for the first time, thus delineating avenues for future research.
