Chinese epigraphic and manuscript sources in European collections

Given the importance of epigraphic and manuscript sources for Chinese history, the Chinese government has in recent years heavily subsidized numerous projects involving the systematic collection of these materials, whether they come from archaeological excavations or public and private collections. In this context, international collaborations have been set up to study and publish the collections located outside China. This is the case, for example, with the rubbings of the University of Berkeley (Shanghai, 2008) or with the oracular inscriptions kept at the Hermitage Museum (Shanghai, 2013). As part of this program, Jean-Pierre Drège proposes to continue publishing the catalogues of Chinese stampings in French collections. The first volume (dedicated to the stampings of the Guimet Museum) will be published in 2021 by the National Library of China Publishing House (国家图书馆出版社) ». Olivier Venture has already looked into the oracular inscriptions of the College de France and contacted Chinese and Japanese specialists to discuss the possibility of a publication in collaboration with the College de France. In addition to the value of the resulting publications, this program could also provide an opportunity for CRCAO students to gain first hand experience in working in direct contact with their research materials.

Scientific output and planned scientific activities

Several catalogues are to be published in connection with this program, as well as research work addressing certain aspects of these collections specifically. An international colloquium around the collections concerned could be organised at the end of the program, in partnership with the institutions where the objects are kept.
