In December 2022, I defended a dissertation entitled: “‘Une armée en guise de peuple’. La structure militaire de l’organisation politique et sociale des nomades eurasiatiques à travers l’exemple mongol médiéval” (« ‘An Army in Place of a People’: The Military Structure of the Political and Social Organization of Eurasian Nomads through the Medieval Mongol Example ») in History and Civilizations at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). In this work, I primarily studied the army of the Mongol Empire (13th-15th centuries) from the perspective of social and institutional history, against the backdrop of recent scholarly debates challenging the tribal paradigm generally applied to the societies of the Central Eurasian steppes. I demonstrated the long-term existence of a distinctly steppe form of the state, based primarily on the army as an instrument of general regimentation, organization, and control of populations. My research focuses on the history of the Mongol Empire and the medieval Eurasian steppes more broadly, particularly on the mechanisms of power exercise and political reconfiguration, and on the persistence of a nomadic governmental repertoire over the long term. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at INaLCO for a project on steppe-based powers in Afghanistan over the longue durée.
