Presentation

As a historian, my research focuses on representations of Inner Asia and its history as seen in French written production. More specifically, I seek to identify the different acceptions of the term ‘Tartar’, from its appearance in medieval Latin texts to its fall into disuse in the early 19th century. Since French scholars mainly relied on Persian and Chinese knowledge, I pay particular attention to the intellectual history of Oriental studies, identifying networks through which texts circulated and the constitution of Oriental manuscript collections.

From the 19th century onwards, the gradual decline of the term ‘Tartar’ did not lead to an end in attempts to collectively represent these populations, now considered to belong to the Turko-Mongol group. Starting from the work of René Grousset, notably L’empire des steppes, I assess the degree of similarity between this idea of ‘Turco-Mongol peoples’ and that of ‘Tartar nations’. Through this question, I highlight the issues and dynamics of French studies on this region during the 19th and 20th centuries.
