Thesis : Chinese Reverse Glass Painting from the 17th to the 19th Century: Production and Commercialization
Directed by Bing Zhao and Corine Maitte

Presentation

Reverse glass painting is an artistic technique that involves painting on the back of a glass surface, allowing the image to be viewed through the glass. Originating in Italy in the 15th century, this technique spread across Europe in the 17th century, facilitated by the invention of flat glass. The art of reverse glass painting reached China in the 17th century, particularly flourishing in the city of Canton, which became a center for the production and export of this art form to Europe and Southeast Asia. This thesis project aims to explore the production and commercialization of Chinese reverse glass painting from this period, addressing its technical, aesthetic, and economic aspects, while examining the associated intercultural dynamics. The study is structured around four main themes: the introduction of European techniques into China, the phases of development and hybridization, the comparison of markets, and the circulation of techniques.
