Presentation
My research in anthropology focuses on the relations that humans have with their animals and their environment within Mongolian pastoral systems. I initially focused on the ways in which herders rely on the agency of their animals in their herding practices, from a comparative perspective between the Halh of Mongolia and the Buryats of Aga in Transbaikalia (Russia). In recent years, my work has centred on Mongolia and has also examined the perception and impacts of environmental change. I maintain a comparative dimension in my approach through fieldwork carried out amongst herders from other ethnic groups (Kazakhs), or living in diverse ecological and climatic conditions (the steppe, the Gobi Desert and the high mountains of the Altai). My work is characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinary openness, through regular collaboration with colleagues specialising in archaeology and biogeochemistry on the one hand, and ethology on the other, in order to deepen and refine the study of pastoral mobility over the long term and the complex intertwining of human and animal behaviours that lies at the heart of pastoral systems.
Research thematics
- Pastoral mobility of contemporary nomadic herders, and more broadly since the Bronze Age
- Mongolian ethno-ethology: herder-animal relations, including communicative and cooperative dimensions, which draw on the herders’ ethological knowledge
- Perceptions of environmental change and its impacts on pastoral systems
