Presentation

My research and teaching in recent years fall into two broad categories: the social history of Tibetan societies, and rituals of the Tibetan Bön religion. My approach to both of these areas is influenced by my background in social anthropology, and while the concerns of the two domains are naturally quite different, research in both cases entails a combination of textual analysis and field investigations. Although I have carried out research in several parts of the Tibet Autonomous Region, recent years have led me back to my initial areas of interest in the culturally Tibetan parts of highland Nepal, notably Mustang and Dolpo. The social-historical part of my work consists of finding and photographing collections of private and community archives in villages, publishing them online and in printed volumes with edited text, translation and commentaries, and subsequently using them as the source material for thematic articles (and a few books). In the past decade, much of this work has been carried out in the framework of two Franco-German collaborations (funded by the ANR and the DFG) between the EPHE and the University of Bonn, co-directed by Peter Schwieger and myself. I am currently planning a similar collaboration with the university of Leipzig.

My work on the rituals of the Bön religion, funded mainly by the Swiss-based Kalpa Group, is based mainly on a close collaboration with several Bonpo lamas. The rituals, belonging mainly to the so-called “lower vehicles” of Bön, are mainly of an apotropaic character. The textual basis is provided by manuscripts in the lamas’ possession. Facsimiles, transliterations and translations of these are added to the dedicated website as that are completed. This research also entails making video documentation of the rituals. At present, approximately 20 hours of subtitled video material has been made available online. The description of each ritual that features on the website contains links to the translated texts that are being read at any given moment, as well as to the points in the videos that show the action being described. It is intended that this website should become a research resource for anyone interested in Tibetan ritual or in interactive methods of presenting rituals in other religions, as well as a teaching tool in university courses in religious studies and related fields.
