Presentation

My research primarily focuses on the socio-political history of the empires established by the Kitans and the Jurchens , with a particular emphasis on the development of historical knowledge about these entities. These polities often referred to as Liao and Jin exerted dominance over parts of the Eurasian steppe and China from the fall of the Tang to the rise of the Mongols, spanning the 10th to the 13th century. I am studying the social organization and the matrimonial structures of the nobilities within these empires based mainly on transmitted sources and funerary inscriptions. Additionally, my research involves text criticism, focusing on works such as the Liaoshi (History of the Liao) and related materials. This approach aims to identify the intent and the sources available to our informants.

Research thematics

  • Political History of the Kitan (Liao, 916-1125) and Jurchen-Jin Empires (1117-1234)
