Thesis : Catholic Church, State, Nationalism: A study of Catholic debates in Japan on the relationship to the State and Nation (1889-1945)
Directed by Matthias Hayek

Presentation

Doctoral student in religious history. EPHE-PSL (2022-) & University of Tokyo (2023-2025).

My research focuses on the history of Japanese Catholicism in the first half of the 20th century. Through a study of the religious press, I examine the integration into public debate of Catholic authors and intellectuals, both Japanese and missionary, their relationship with the imperial state and their vision of patriotism. Beyond this, I examine the place of religious ideas in Taishō democracy, as well as in the construction of the nation-state in Japan.

Research thematics

  • Christianity and empire in Japan (19th-20th centuries)
  • Japanese Catholic media history
  • Religions in Taishō democracy
