Lecture by Dr. CHE Zhixin, Beijing Foreign Studies University.
Presented in Chinese, with an English explanation available.
ABSTRACT
A central issue in contemporary Chinese mass culture concerns how traditional cultural resources can be creatively transformed. Marshall McLuhan’s theory of “remediation” provides a useful framework for examining cross-media phenomena in the digital age. Taking Sifu — an action game developed by the French independent studio Sloclap — as a case study, this lecture examines how video games transform wuxia narratives originally rooted in textual media (the novels of Jin Yong), through visual forms of representation (Hong Kong kung fu films), into embodied and interactive gameplay mechanics.
