I am Full Professor in Japanese Cultural History at the University of Geneva. I address in my researches the written and visual cultures of Japan (practices and discourses), the relationships between text and image, and between writing and orality, from the classical period to contemporary Japan, as well as Japanese cinema. I published À la croisée du texte et de l’image : paysages cryptiques et poèmes cachés (ashide) dans le Japon classique et médiéval in 2009, and I am also co-editor of Du pinceau à la typographie. Regards japonais sur l’écriture et le livre (2006), De l’épopée au Japon : narration épique et théâtralité dans le Dit des Heike (2011), Rébus d’ici et d’ailleurs : écriture, image, signe (2018). I am co-translator or I directed the translation of Japanese medieval texts : La Vie du Buddha racontée et illustrée au Japon (Shaka no honji, 2010), Notes sans titre. Propos sur les poètes et sur la poésie de Kamo no Chômei (Mumyôshô, 2010), Des mérites comparés du saké et du riz illustré par un rouleau japonais du XVIIe siècle (Shuhanron emaki, 2014), and En longeant la mer de Kyôto à Kamakura (Kaidôki, 2019).

  • Relationship between text and image in pre-modern and modern Japan, with a focus on cryptographic tradition and the rendering of texts into images
  • History of writing and caligraphy in Japan (evolution, discourses and practices)
  • Semiology of writing and images as a visual approach to the visual culture of classical and modern Japan
  • History of literary production in classical Japan, with a focus on epic narrative (formulation, genre and reception)
  • Japanese cinema (in particular Kobayashi Masaki and Kurosawa Kiyoshi)
