Thesis title: The First Chinese Travelogues in Europe: The Role of the Representation of ‘the Foreign’ in the Transformation of Chinese Language

Thesis director: Victor VUILLEUMIER

My doctoral research project pursues the analyses of the first Chinese travelogues in Europe, some of which are collected in《走向世界叢書》Zǒuxiàng shìjiè cóngshū [Advance towards the world Collection] (1985) edited by 钟叔河 Zhōng Shūhé, from the dual perspective of the imagology and the language history.

Research themes:

  • Chinese travel literature
  • process of literary representation of ‘otherness’ via a new language
  • process of hybridisation of the language and of the ideas in modern China since the end of 19th century
